And then a strange word.
When Rachel returned to the car, Bruno Petronelli did not ask her where she had been or why she had taken so long. She wondered if this was to protect her or himself, but she was relieved. Rachel was in a state of shock. What strange things she had seen and heard on the second floor of Meyer and Sons. A family of ghosts? A door to the dead? A Book that, if wrongly used, could allow a tyrant to rule Krasnia for ever? But if rightly used could bring her mother back to life?
Bruno drove without speaking a word, without seeming to hurry, and in such a way that would not draw attention. A light drizzle had started up and he quietly turned on the windscreen wipers. They made an elegant rhythmic swish as the car purred down the road towards the airfield. Rachel sat back and allowed herself to breathe.
She admired this neutral quality of Brunoâs. He was like a windscreen wiper himself, she thought. Doing his job with efficiency and style. Rachel wasnât sure she would ever possess this coolness. It wasnât in her veins. She was too beset by worries and guilt. And perhaps being like Bruno had its drawbacks. Perhaps it was one reason why you could work for the devil and not seem to mind. A windscreen wiper does not ask who is driving the car.
As Bruno changed gear with a smooth tan-gloved hand, Rachel felt the piece of paper Solomon had given her in her coat pocket. She hadnât had time to consider fully what it meant. But surely the RK must refer to her brother? And the BSD to The Book of Stolen Dreams? Then had Robert told Lucius he had the Book? And if so, how? Either way, it was vital that if the airship security searched her as she boarded, they did not find the paper.
Rachel reached down, pretended to itch her ankle, and slipped the paper into her left sock. It fitted nicely. If Bruno noticed, he didnât say. But then, of course, he wouldnât.
As they approached the airfield, Rachel saw the vast form of the Pegasus waiting on the grey horizon. Large crowds were gathering. Bruno turned on the radio. The news was on. President Malstain had just confirmed that in light of the attempt on his life in Port Clement, he was closing all Krasnian borders in two daysâ time. Rachel sensed that was why the airfield was packed with last-minute travellers, people desperate to get out and join family or friends abroad.
âRachel.â Bruno spoke at last. âThere will be secret police watching every passenger. Keep your head up, never look like youâre hiding. Your identification papers will get you past almost any standard customs officer. Just actââ
âLike I own the place.â She finished his sentence for him.
âYes, exactly.â He smiled and stopped the car a few hundred yards from the entrance. âYouâll forgive me if I donât take you the whole way.â
She nodded.
